because pirates are awesome and fondant is yucky

easy pirate cupcakes

My piffling kids are obsessed with pirates. Our swing set out back is officially a pirate ship (fueled past swing power, of class), and I'm regularly asked to play Captain Hook. Concluding calendar week I decided to win some "not bad mom" points past making some pirate cupcakes, then I started searching Pinterest for ideas. Much to my dismay, all the beautiful pirate cupcakes were fabricated using fondant, which I just think is plain icky. I know, I know, there are certainly "better" fondant recipes out there, only I have yet to try one that tastes anywhere nearly as good as patently bootleg frosting. Plus, crafting fondant creations is simply across me – I'm pretty terrible at decorating cakes – so I needed to come up up with something piece of cake. And so the troops and I set out to the store to effigy out how to make beautiful & easy pirate cupcakes using candy, not fondant, as the decorations.

We started with an piece of cake one: gilded doubloon cupcakes.

cupcake with white frosting, graham cracker crumbs for sand, white pearl candy, chocolate gold coin

I scooped frosting into a sandwich purse, cut a hole from a corner, and "piped" the frosting on, starting at the outside and swirling into the middle. We crushed up graham crackers to brand "sand" and then dropped on a few candy pearls (I establish these by the block decorating stuff in the blistering aisle – they're called cupcake gems by Betty Crocker). Tiptop information technology all with a chocolate coin and you're done! Easy.

Next we made pirate send (Jolly Roger) cupcakes:

cupcake with blue frosting and ship made from vanilla and chocolate wafers

For these I used a sharp knife to slice vanilla and chocolate sugar wafer cookies into the correct shape. Then I put some chocolate chips in a sandwich bag, melted them in the microwave, clipped off a corner of the bag, and piped chocolate out to "glue" the send together. I laid the ships down flat on a plate and popped them in the freezer for a few minutes to harden up. TIP: if your frosting isn't stiff, it helps to stick a toothpick behind the send in one case information technology's on the cupcake so information technology doesn't autumn over.

Adjacent nosotros made treasure chest cupcakes.

I got the light brown frosting by mixing some baking cocoa and yellowish nutrient coloring into white frosting. For the treasure chests I started with two Hershey's nuggets, mini M&Ms (mine are really candy covered sunflower seeds, only same same), and more melted chocolate fries in a sandwich bag. Put them together every bit shown beneath and and so pop in the freezer until hard:

And finally came the actual pirate cupcakes:

cupcake with frosting and pirate face made from vanilla wafer with fruit by the foot bandana and eye and eyepatch piped in melted chocolate

His face is a vanilla wafer cookie. I wrapped a piece of fruit by the human foot around the peak third or then and folded it over onto the back (simply squish it down on the back and information technology volition stay). I added more candy pearls to make polka dots on the bandana then used more melted chocolate fries piped from a bag to brand the eye and eye patch. To become the dark scarlet frosting I used baking cocoa and lots of carmine food coloring in white frosting.
