"All My Friends" is a song past British production duo Snakehips, featuring American recording artists Tinashe and Chance the Rapper. It was released as a single on 21 October 2015 past Sony Music United kingdom and Columbia Records. It won the Ivor Novello Award for All-time Contemporary Song in May 2016.[one]

Background and composition [edit]

On Genius, Snakehips summarised the song: "Nosotros wanted to brand something that had a classic hip-hop groove and gospel vibes just and then have some modernistic more electronic sounds going on too. We made the crush and wrote the claw last year in London. We thought Tinashe and Hazard would be the perfect vocalists for it and so nosotros reached out to them. Nosotros never really expected to exist able to make it happen every bit they were both huge artists doing their own thing, but they both were into information technology and we managed to put information technology all together. It was recorded in a few different places and we never all got into the studio at once just because everyone'south schedules were then crazy!"[2]

Regarding the chorus ("All my friends are wasted / And I hate this guild, man I drink too much / Another Fri night I've wasted / My eyes are black and red, I'g crawling dorsum to your bed"), the duo said: "We wrote the claw and came up with the concept with our writing partner Cass Lowe last yr. We thought it would be cool to do an anti-party rails that kinda sounded uplifting at the same fourth dimension and had some gospel vibes to information technology. And yeah we've had a load of whack nights out in the by, I call back it'due south something everyone can relate to."[three]

In an interview with the Official Charts Company, Snakehips member Ollie Lee explained that the song is non about i particular story, but "really only about years of bad nights out... living in London!"[iv] When asked almost how the collaboration came about, Lee continued, "I have no idea to be honest with you. We made the shell to the song last yr and we actually wanted Tinashe and Run a risk on the song. Honestly, they were our start choices for the track – they were two relatively new acts at the time and we both loved what they were doing. We just sent them the song and they both said they liked it. We couldn't believe that they'd even heard of us. I nonetheless can't believe it all worked out actually. The whole thing is sort of ridiculous..."[4]

Commercial performance [edit]

"All My Friends" debuted on the ARIA Singles Nautical chart at number 27 on the nautical chart date 21 December 2015. Information technology eventually peaked at number 3.[v]

In the United kingdom of great britain and northern ireland, the song peaked at number v on the Official Singles Chart.[6] The song likewise peaked at number 2 in New Zealand, number 7 in Scotland and number 15 in Ireland. The song marked Tinashe every bit her biggest track to perform successfully as a featured artist in Great britain and Australia.

Music video [edit]

A music video for the track was released on sixteen Nov 2015. Information technology was directed by Mister Whitmore.[vii]

The video opens with Tinashe sitting on the edge of the roof of a building at night whilst singing her verse. Information technology and then cuts to a long queue to go into a nightclub and the shot continues panning to the left, where we run across couples kissing, people throwing up and a young human in a snapback stumbling forward before sitting down and drinking out of a bag. The camera continues leftward until information technology reaches the front of the line (other than a new shot of Tinashe singing the span whilst sitting in the back of a taxi and wearing sunglasses). The bouncer, refusing to let anyone in, mouths "Fuck off!" at the camera in forepart of him.[8]

Take chances does not appear in the main video, but there is a director's cutting which features him singing on a graphical screen, which the aforementioned guy in the snapback sees and is amazed.[9]

Live performances [edit]

On 25 February 2016, Snakehips, Hazard the Rapper and Tinashe performed the track on Jimmy Kimmel Alive.[10]
